All students in grades 3-8 are required to change for gym class. Students in K-2 need to wear sneakers on gym days as well.
Class will be held outside if the weather permits, so clothes should be packed accordingly. The gym is very warm in the winter months so shorts and t-shirts are recommended.
Sneakers must be tied for class and shirts are required to have sleeves.
Younger girls are encouraged to wear shorts or pants on gym days. However, if they do choose to wear a jumper, please add shorts under their skirts to protect their modesty.
Older students are encouraged to bring deodorant. THEY MAY NOT USE AEROSOL SPRAYS. Aerosol sprays have the ability to trigger allergies and/or asthma flare ups. In order to protect all of our students these sprays are prohibited, as is sharing of any personal hygiene items.
Grading
Physical education is a graded class for grades 1-8. Grades 1 and 2 are graded on the S or NI scale. All other grades are based on the school grading scale.
Grades are not based on physical ability but on effort and participation.
All students have the opportunity to earn 5 points for each gym class they attend. Points are deducted for not having appropriate gym clothes, disrespectful behavior, or lack of participation.
Grades are available on Option C. If points were deducted, comments notes will be posted in the comment space to explain the reason.
If students do not have clothes for a gym class they may not participate in the planned activity. However, they will be asked to walk laps as a way of being physically active during their scheduled time.
If a student is ill or injured and therefore restricted from participation in class, they should present a note stating the problem and the date of the class or classes that are in question. The note will excuse them from only the classes that take place on the dates indicated. Doctors excuses are preferred.
Expectations
Students are expected to come to class prepared to participate.
Effort is required in all activities. Participation is not a choice, it is a requirement.
Students will be accepting of each other's talents and abilities. Voicing judgment of others is not acceptable.
Students should report any injury that occurs in gym class to the teacher before the end of class so that it can be handled during that class period.
Students should conduct themselves appropriately in the locker rooms. The locker rooms are an extension of the gym as a classroom space. Therefore, classroom behavior is expected.
Materials and equipment used for gym class will treated respectfully and used appropriately at all times.
